The purpose of this handbook is to help students prepare for college and other training opportunities by offering valuable information, tips, and advice to help make understanding the process smoother. This handbook can also be used by community members and parents as a planning guidebook for assisting students who are interested in higher education and training opportunities.

Scholarships

Agnes Larsen Darnell Scholarship

This scholarship is available to Aleut shareholders and their descendants who are seniors in high school with a 3.0 gpa or better and will be attending a 4 year university. The $1000 per year scholarship will be awarded each Fall for four years with proof of enrollment, $4000 total. The winner will be required to submit their grades to us at the end of each year.

Agnes Larsen was born in 1934 in St. Paul, AK. She grew up in King Cove where she went to school until the 8th grade. She graduated high school at Mt. Edgecumbe and went on to Western College in Bellingham, WA where she earned her teaching credential. She taught at Wrangell Institute and in King Cove. She loved teaching and thought her Alaska students were “so smart.”

Patty Iron Cloud Nation Native Youth Initiative Summer Program - Health Scholarship

American Indian/Alaska Native high school students age 16 – 18 that are planning to enter a health profession are eligible to apply. Students must have a minimum cumulative 2.5 GPA (A = 4.0). Students are selected on the basis of scholastic achievement, demonstrated interest in the fields of health sciences or biomedical research, leadership skills, and personal attributes. Scholarship pays for lodging, most meals, and travel expenses

NOTICE: The Patty Iron Cloud National Native American Youth Initiative is NOT a summer camp or sightseeing trip - it is an intensive academic enrichment program that consists of a rigorous schedule of all-day sessions as well as continuous walking and/or walking long distances. You must be prepared to work hard and use your own initiative to take advantage of this learning opportunity.

APICDA HIGHER EDUCATION SCHOLARSHIP

The Aleutian Pribilof Island Community Development Association (APICDA) announces the availability of scholarships for the 2009 spring semester. Applicants must meet one of the two residency requirements:

1. historical relationship to one of the following communities Atka, Akutan, False Pass, Nelson Lagoon, Nikolski, St. George, or Unalaska or

a minimum of five years current residency in one of the seven communities listed above: Applicants must be formally accepted at a college or university, students may attend on a full-time or part-time basis and must maintain a 2.0 GPA or greater.

Scholarships are awarded up to $2,500 for the spring semester, depending on need and number of credits taken. Completed application packets are due by November 15, 2008. Late applications will not be accepted.

2009 ALASKA NATIVE TRIBAL HEALTH CONSORTIUM (ANTHC) $5000 Scholarship

Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium (ANTHC) Education and Development awards $5000 academic year scholarships to five (5) undergraduate and five (5) graduate full-time students who are Alaska Native or American Indian and are permanent Alaska residents. ANTHC grants these scholarships as an integral part of its long-term strategy of providing the highest quality health services to all Alaska Natives and American Indians. ANTHC is Alaska’s largest Native health provider, serving over 130,000 Alaska Natives and American Indians. Denali Commission Summer Internships

The Denali Commission will be hiring four interns this summer. Two positions will be based at RurAL CAP as community planners and the other two positions will be based at the Denali Commission.

2009 CH2M HILL, Energy & Chemicals for Alaska Summer Internship

CH2M HILL, Energy & Chemicals for Alaska is now accepting applications for college interns for the summer of 2009.

Each year CH2MHILL recruits highly motivated engineering, business and computer science students from the University of Alaska, Anchorage and Fairbanks campuses.

In addition to direct recruiting we partner with the Alaska Native Science and Engineering Program (ANSEP) to find sophomores, juniors and seniors pursuing degrees in engineering or related fields. CH2MHILL also supports the ANSEP Bridging Program with interns.

The interns are given a chance to go on field trips to places such as the CH2MHILL Kenai Field Office, ConocoPhillips Gas to Liquid Plant in Nikiski and Marathon Oil Gas Field in Kenai. Interns participate in weekly meetings, interact with clients and learn all the aspects of the business world. Often it is the first opportunity for students to complete timesheets, expense reports and collaborate with professionals within their field of internship.

CH2MHILL interns will be able to take with them the knowledge of working with various clients such as BP, ConocoPhillips, Alyeska. The interns experience varies depending on their discipline they will be working with: they maybe checking drawings, calculating manpower projects, providing AutoCad support, writing reports or working at our FAB Shop.

As part of the program all interns are assigned a mentor and together they agree on what each of them wish to receive from the process. The progress toward these expectations is tracked using weekly and monthly reports listing accomplishments and areas needing improvement. At the end of the summer interns go through an exit interview and discuss their experience. This information is used to tailor the program to provide the best possible experience for everyone involved.

2009 ALASKA NATIVE TRIBAL HEALTH CONSORTIUM (ANTHC) Summer Internship

Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium (ANTHC) Education and Development awards nine-week paid summer internships beginning Monday, June 8, 2009 to Friday, August 7, 2009 to approximately 20 high school and undergraduate students and five graduate students who are Alaska Native or American Indian and are permanent Alaska residents. ANTHC grants these internships as an integral part of its long-term strategy of providing the highest quality health services to all Alaska Natives and American Indians. ANTHC provides work experience in a range of medical professions and support services including finance, human resources, health records, computer technology, engineering, maintenance, and housekeeping.

ANTHC is Alaska’s largest Native health provider, serving over 130,000 Alaska Natives and American Indians. ANTHC is a private non-profit, tax-exempt corporation that compacts with the federal government to provide healthcare-related services. ANTHC’s major programs include Administration, Community Health, Information Technology, Human Resources, Environmental Health and Engineering, and the Alaska Native Medical Center, which is managed in cooperation with Southcentral Foundation.

2009 Morris K. Udall Foundation Internship Program

The Native American Congressional Internship Program is a ten-week summer internship in Washington, DC, for Native American and Alaska Native undergraduate, graduate and law students. Students are placed in Congressional offices, committees, or select agencies to experience an insider’s view of the federal government and learn more about the federal government’s trust relationship with tribes. The Foundation provides round-trip airfare, housing, per diem, and a $1,200 educational stipend. Applications must be received at the Foundation by January 30, 2009. 2009 Morris K. Udall Foundation Scholarship Program

The Scholarship Program awards eighty $5,000 merit-based scholarships for college sophomores and juniors seeking a career in tribal health, tribal public policy or the environment. Scholarship recipients participate in a five-day Orientation in Tucson, AZ, to learn more about tribal and environmental issues. Applications must be submitted through a Udall Faculty Representative at the student's college or university. More information about Faculty Representatives can be found on the Udall website. The application deadline for the 2009 academic year is March 3, 2009.
